Patient Interaction with Tummy Tuck experts Dr. Anmol Chugh

Patient : “What is a tummy tuck?”

Dr. Chugh : “A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove excess fat and skin from the abdomen while tightening the underlying abdominal muscles. It’s a great option for patients who are looking to reshape and contour their tummy area.”

Patient : “How does it work?”

Dr. Chugh: “The procedure starts with incisions made at the top and sides of your abdomen to remove excess fat and skin which includes liposuction of front and most of the times back also. Then your underlying abdominal muscles are tightened. The skin is then pulled into its new position and secured with sutures. This process leaves you with a smoother, flatter stomach area.”

Patient : “What are the benefits of a tummy tuck?”

Dr. Chugh : “The benefits of a tummy tuck are twofold.

First, it gives you a more aesthetically pleasing shape and appearance to your abdomen area.

And second, it can help improve your posture and make it easier to get in and out of bed or while doing an activity. It can also help you get back into fitting into your favorite clothes.”

Patient :  Could you explain what the potential consequences of Tummy tuck are?

Dr. Chugh: Sure! Tummy tucks are generally safe procedures, but like with all types of surgery there are some potential complications that you should be aware of. These include infection, bleeding, scarring, or reactions to the anesthesia. You may also experience some temporary swelling or pain after surgery. Additionally, with any type of incision there is a risk of developing a seroma, which is a collection of fluid at the site of the incision.

Patient: How can these complications be avoided?

Dr. Chugh: To minimize your risk of complications, you should follow all pre and postoperative instructions given to by myself or my staff. For example, it is important to quit smoking prior to the surgery as that can interfere with healing. Additionally, it’s important to keep any wound sites clean and dry and attend any required follow-up appointments.

Patient: What can I expect with regards to pain after a tummy tuck?

Dr. Chugh : Most of my patients find that the initial post-operative pain is manageable, but it can be slightly uncomfortable. You will likely feel some tightness and soreness in your mid to lower abdominal area due to the sutures used during the procedure. It’s natural to experience this and can last for up to two weeks.

Patient : What can I do to help manage the pain?

Dr. Chugh: You should follow the post-operative instructions that I provide you with. Take any prescribed pain medications as directed and use cold compresses to reduce swelling. You should also get plenty of rest and use a compression garment to provide support and help alleviate pain. Some people find that physical therapy can also help.
