How to time your vaccination and cosmetic surgery like liposuction?

How to time your vaccination and cosmetic surgery like liposuction?

It is one of the most important questions being asked by my patients nowadays. There are two scenarios that currently exists:

  1. Vaccination before Liposuction

Vaccination drive in India started around Mid-January and it has gained momentum slowly as we are still very far behind in terms of vaccination. There two types of vaccine that we have India. One is Covaxin and other is Covishield and both the vaccines require two doses.

In Covaxin the gap between the two doses is around four to six weeks while in Covishield it’s around six to eight weeks. If you are considering cosmetic surgery or any elective surgery in this year or months ahead, you should time your vaccination first because it will help us break the chain of Covid pandemic.

You should get your two doses of vaccine then keep a gap of at least one week so that even if you develop any kind of fever, malaise or chills after getting your vaccination done then you have sufficient time to understand the cause of the fever and hence are fully fit before your cosmetic surgery.

  1. Vaccination after Liposuction

Patients who have just got their cosmetic surgery done and are not vaccinated, I would advise them to get yourself properly examined by your surgeon and if the healing is complete. If you don’t have any symptoms, fully active, carrying out your daily activities without any problem and if your surgeon says that you are fully fit. I would highly suggest go for the vaccination as it will protect you against the Covid 19 infection.

Before any Cosmetic Surgery like Liposuction, you will undergo certain tests like

  • Complete Blood Count
  • Coagulation Profile
  • Liver function test
  • Kidney function test
  • Random Blood Sugar
  • Chest Xray, ECG
  • COVID-19 RT PCR not before 48 hours of Surgery

Smoking, Alcohol consumption, Herbal Supplements, Green tea, Vitamin E should be stopped at least a week before cosmetic surgery.

Please do get vaccinated as this is the only thing that is going to stop the spread. Do wear a mask properly, maintain social distancing even after vaccination!
